Why do SUVs get bashed for fuel economy, but not trucks?

by admin on February 28, 2010

Trucks do use more gas than SUVs in general, yet it’s the SUVs that keep getting criticized for its fuel economy.

Also in Canada, the government has issued a gas guzzler tax on all cars exceeding a certain fuel consumption rating, except trucks (they didn’t even state as to why trucks were exempt from the tax), so what is it about trucks that make them less prone to criticism?

Trucks are useful. they do work. SUV’s often do nothing more than haul children and groceries.

because trucks are usually used for businesses or farms, so they are necessary for many people. An SUV just looks cool, but if you want to carry lots of people you could always drive a minivan and save on gas.

Suv’s are anything but cool looking. And I bash both of them .Must trucks are not used for there intended purpose. All they carry is air.

Idiot… who needs an SUV??? Trucks transport all of the nations goods. They are a vital part of infrastructure. SUV’s are not. Unless you’re out doing nightly border patrols with your 50 cal machine gun strapped to the roof then I suggest you buy a van.

Listen carefully to the news on stories involving SUVs…
Its ALWAYS ..the suv hit the crowd… the suv drove into the lake…
I can’t stand the mentality of eco-loons that tell people what they can do, what they drive, where and when. Governments are willing accomplices in stripping people of their freedoms, for politicians its about power and nothing more.
You Canadians have it tougher than us with that stupid tax but you’re all taxed out the wazoo anyways. We here the states are trying darnedest not to have it happen to us.
Edit – and here happily, what my neighbor thinks about my car/truck whatever is completely irrelevant… as it should be.

Because if you look at most of the people driving SUV’s you see that they don’t NEED them not even every once in a while. How many trucks are out there that NEVER haul ANYTHING (not many). How many SUV’s are running around out there that have NEVER had more than 4 people in them (probably over 75%) and they’ve probably never even been in a gravel driveway much less on a muddy road but yet they have 4 wheel drive don’t they (don’t try saying they need it for snow and ice because most of those people wouldn’t dare driving their baby in that mess)

Because people are stupid and short-sighted, and they parrot what they hear in the media instead of coming up with original thoughts. I had a Ford LTD that got 12 miles to the gallon. Many SUVs get better mileage. No one ever complained about my car, even though I used it for exactly the same purpose that most SUVs get used for. Transporting people.

Trucks are usually used for work that you can’t use a car for. SUV’s are generally being flocked to as a family vehichle but the truth is that most people that are buying the gas guzzler SUV could easily get by with a car that got 2 or 3 times the the fuel economy. Example, People say that they like SUV’s because they drive well in the snow. Fact is most of the time you can get the bad weather performance from an AWD car and get far better fuel economy. In short most people that have the gas guzzler SUV don’t need it and that is why they get bashed for it.
