What is the best way to remove all personal vehicles getting less than 20 mpg (Average) off the road?

by admin on September 3, 2009

There really is no excuse to be driving a vehicle like that on a regular basis. If you do, you are basically saying, “Man!! I really don’t care about anyone else. It’s all about me!!! MEEEEEE!!!!”

Should we tax heavily?
Maybe we could leverage gas prices based on fuel economy…

What do you think?
Ummm hello…personal vehicles? Normally “personal vehicles” does not include semis…

this is a free country. if you want to make 20mpg + laws, book a ticket to a commi country.

I drive an SUV, it doesn’t get good gas mileage, and I knew that when I bought it. I have it because I have to tow a boat from time to time, and I haul things in it. I pay 2x or more than the average person pays for fuel. That’s “punishment” enough, as far as I’m concerned. Not everybody has a lifestyle that permits driving a Chevy Cobalt or a Toyota Prius. I don’t consider myself to be a selfish person, but what would you have me do? It’s not for you or anybody else to decide what an appropriate vehicle is for someone else.

So we should ban all semi trucks?!!!! Don’t know about you but I like to eat, live in a house, and have a job!

FYI there a lot of semi’s that are personal use vehicles too…open your mind poor boy!

I think when gas is $5.00 a gallon.. you’ll see all the huge suv’s with one person in them get off the road. It was that way in the 80’s with the last gas crisis… Caddy’s were park on streets with for sale signs on them.

Rise in Gas prices,
Consumer drop in demand for those vehicles.

Global warming is kind of a fad, people thought it was Global Cooling in the 1970s, and then Acid Rain, then the Ozone Layer, all of which people just forget about now because they turned out to be nonsense.

So while the actual effects of Cars in North America combine to a total of only 1% of CO2 emitted and improving from 20mpg to 40mpg won’t make one tiny bit of difference, its really more of a social and financial trend inspiring things like hybrid cars.

Compare that with the more tangible reason people want the cars, both for personal safety and for the actual utility of having a larger vehicle and you come to a pretty easy conclusion.

Actual benefits to you and your family generally will outweigh fake imagined benefits of environmentalists.

Shift toward fuel efficiency will occur simply as technology increases to make engines more efficient or produce an actual viable alternative to Gasoline that is CHEAPER (ie. not Ethanol)

Car companies will simply make what people want, and if people start refusing to buy 20mpg+ models, they’ll stop making them.

Unfortunately, most companies have learned that contrary to intuitive thought, it turns out a small group is willing to pay a PREMIUM for things that seem environmentally friendly. So instead of setting prices to encourage people to use things like Hybrids, they are actualyl charging more for them still.
As the market develops they will drop in price and it will become the norm.

But trying to force the consumer to do something it doesn’t want through taxes or laws, just isn’t gonna happen.

Use your own money, buy up all of them you want, then do what you want with them…

Oh, you want someone else to pay to implement what YOU think is a good idea???

If you implement a tax, then the government develops a reliance on that revenue, creating LESS incentive for them to take those cars off the road.

It’s called the free market…

Your statement makes no sense. What about large families with more than 5 or 6 people that need a large SUV or Van to haul everybody around at the same time? People need trucks for hauling their campers, horse trailers, boats, trailers and for many other recreational/business purposes. So according to you people should not be able to have fun just because you don’t like their gas mileage? Anyway people will naturally shy away from gas guzzling cars and SUV’s once gas prices keep getting higher and higher.

Those cars should be banned . In order to fix the enviroment . I drive a hybrid car . Everybody should get a fuel-efficient car and stop polluting . I just bought a Saab 9-3 BioPower Hybrid Concept last week . I got it professionally repainted so that it wouldn’t have words on the sides . Laws should be made, damn it !

Sorry, but there really are excuses for driving a larger vehicle, and I have an excellent one.

I happen to be well over six feet tall, and I don’t particularly like driving with my head pressed against the roof and my knees in my face. So for me as well as others my size, those tiny, fuel-efficient cars are out of the question.

This is Anerica and people have a right to drive what they wish. The fact that YOU don’t like it is irrelevant.

I think you are the selfish one because you dont like those types of trucks so you think they should disappear so I dont like you does that mean that you should disappear? No! I drive an OLD LARGE BAD GAS MILEAGE TRUCK AND I LOVE MY TRUCK and do you want to know why because that truck belonged to my grandfather who was killed by a drunk driver and then it belonged to my brother who was an marine and killed in Iraq and my truck is what he left me so there is not a soul on this earth who will tell me that I cant drive my truck because they dont like the gas mileage

mimas September 23, 2009 at 7:00 pm

Well President Jimmy Carter tried to do that, he was right back then, if we had stuck to small cars that got 38+ miles to the gallon, we would have far less pollution and no global warming, he was way to advanced in future planning for future generations, to be taken seriously…the gas rationing was a disaster in calif. Now everyone has to be comfortable in their hugh suvs, to heck with future generations having to deal with global warming due to status quo unnessasary comfort. We difinately have to do something.

If you need such a vehicle, then there is the excuse for driving such vehicle! Know what I mean? There’s no need to raise the tax.

As much as I would LOVE to drive a newer car that gets more than 20 mpg, I am a BROKE college-age kid. My fiancee and I switch between an 82 Capri, a 78 Bronco, and a 79 Jeep depending on which one isn’t broken down at the time.

How about introducing some kind of government program to assist those in my situation who DO care about the environment in getting a less detrimental vehicle?!?

At the same time, get off your soap box. I come from a family of 12. I grew up on welfare. We drove a 15 passenger van. Are you going to tax families who are already under financial strain? Sounds like you should put a lot more thought into this idea.

Oiler September 27, 2009 at 5:16 am

Let’s ban all vehicles that get less than 40 mpg.

No, 50!!

Ban em all!!

Light the fires, we’re burning the library!!
