What are some basic, practical things I can do while driving to increase my fuel economy?

by admin on June 6, 2010

I’ve heard accelerating slower, keeping the RPMs low, turning off the A/C, keeping windows rolled up, and many different other things help increase fuel economy. Is this true? And what are some other techniques I can implement to get better gas mileage.

All of this is good stuff. Check tire pressure, maintain constant power (slower up the hill, faster down), and if you can find a more efficient vehicle, consider buying it.

Check your tire pressure. Change air filter and if needed spark plugs and wires. Dont keep extra weight items in car or trunk.

check your air filter and replace it if it is dirty and replace your spark plugs if they are more than 2 years old. This helps alot with gas

Tire Pressure #1 Not to high maybe 2-3 punds over recommened otherwise money saved will be used toward faster wearing tires. Windows down in order to cool car off up 46mph then a/c or nothing. Keep Gas Tank Full as possible. Limit city driving always use highway when possible. Avoid extra weight ex subwoofers or hauling unnecessary items. avoid turning off car although this may be a security issue in some places for example if your getting out to drop a letter in a mailbox keep car running if you are close and in eye range. Maintain clean air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs. A clogged fuel filter can cost you 5-10mpg and is relatively cheap (9.99$) and easy to change. there are plenty more repair/maintenance things you can do these are the easiest however.

just accelerate slower, windows up, remove extra junk in the trunk, no a/c, turn off car if it will be sitting for more than 3 min, keep up on all standard matince, look into after market parts than can increse fuel economy such as a cold air or ram air intake system, or a performance exhaust. run high test in your car once a month to clean it out of anything that may dirty up the fuel system. clean your o2 sensor with carb cleaner, change oil and oil filter every 3000 miles.
