Fast Facts
In the month of Oct. 2009, the VW Jetta TDI sold 1,839 units. In that same period of time, the Toyota Prius sold 14,569 units.
i didnt understand why mini was here… but i was really suprised by the MPG it got.. a lot higher then i thought. over 30 MPG in city is amazing
ya know I’d buy all that pollution crap about the toyota being sooo clean if it wern’t for all the extra pollutants created making them. Check your facts a toyota prius cames from the factory with a larger carbon footprint than most economy cars will have at 63,000 miles. The only place they can get the batteries manufactured is in China lotsa eco work going on there!!
So basically the Prius only has one pitfall now, in my mind… that funky styling. I like the Fusion because it looks like a normal car; not everybody wants to shout their eco-awareness or hybrid possession. If Toyota offered a more… subtle and classic design, it would be better in my mind. It doesn’t have to be a fashion accessory.
71mpg in Europe, not the USA
The U.S. gallon has 128 ounces in it, while Imperial gallon contains 160 ounces. That means that the miles per gallons will be rated higher in Europe, simply because there is way more fuel per gallon. Thats why cars in Europe (Polo) seem to get a higher gas mileage. If they were sold in the US, they would get a much lower rating. The Bluemotion Polo is rated to get 71mpg, is a very small car that has 75hp and does 0-60 in just under 14 seconds. BTW you can’t buy it, because it’s not for sale.

Prius – 50 mpg
Jetta TDI – 34 mpg
Toyota alomost sold more Priuses in the month of Oct. then all the VWs combined.
Prius – 14,569
All VWs – 21,037

Toyota Prius – 14,569
Jetta TDI – 1,839
Queensland fleet of Black and White Taxis, owner Graham Boundy knows the truth about high-mileage Hybrids. His oldest Prius has managed a lifespan of 361,000 before needing replacement of their nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries. The only problem even at the end of their battery pack service life was a low voltage reading. So which means the battery started to wear out around 361,000 miles. At 15,000 miles a year, it would take you 23 years to wear the battery out.
If you want to see how “clean” it’s is… start the TDI in your garage with the doors shut. You will see just how “clean” it’s not! Sorry, but you would be dead! If you are going to call something “clean”, it should actually be CLEAN!
Definition; clean >adjective – free from dirt, pollutants, or harmful substances.
733 mile test done in conditions that most benefit the TDI by VW to discredit the Prius, revealed some interesting numbers…
CO2 Emitted:
‘10 Jetta TDI: 146.37kg
‘04 Prius: 137.05kg
CO Emitted:
‘10 Jetta TDI: 293.2g
‘04 Prius: 73.3g
NOx Emitted:
‘10 Jetta TDI: 36.65g
‘04 Prius: 7.33g
When NOx and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) react in the presence of sunlight, they form photochemical smog, a significant form of air pollution, especially in the summer. Children, people? with lung diseases such as asthma, and people who work or exercise outside are susceptible to adverse effects of smog such as damage to lung tissue and reduction in lung function.
In areas of high motor vehicle traffic, such as in large cities, the amount of nitrogen oxides emitted into the atmosphere can be quite significant.
Carbon monoxide, with the chemical formula CO, is a major atmospheric pollutant in urban areas, chiefly from exhaust of internal combustion. It is a colorless, odorless and tasteless, yet highly toxic gas.

The pollution you are talking about started 126 years ago. It’s kinda hard to blame a car that has only been around for 12 years and only uses 1.5% of the mines annual output. If they were to produce the nickel just for Toyota the mine would only be needed for 3 maybe 4 months, not 126 years, which wouldn’t do anything to the environment. You realize that the same thing that you are saying is polluting the environment, you use yourself… Right? Cell Phones use more batt then the Prius ever will
to make and ship the batteries in a prius, it pretty much does more damage to the environment than just driving a regular car
Ya you get 50mpg with pusis but at the expense of looking like a wuss. Like Elvenous said, once a tdi is broken you get 50 easy and it will run forever with out tons of batterys in the dump.
that tdi probably wasn’t broken in. Drivers with 10-15,000 miles are reporting between 45 and 50 mpg on the highway. You are right though. The older TDIs were more efficient because they weighed less and had a less powerful engine. 90 hp vs the new 140 hp.
On a prius i have no idea but you can put over 500,000 miles on a diesel.
That jetta tdi definitely was not broken in. I guarantee that if it had about 15,000 miles on it, they would have gotten at least 45 on the highway. Mine would have kicked the shit out of the prius. I have an 06 dsg and can get over 50 mpg at 70 mph on the highway. I average 44 mpg during normal highway/city driving. That’s right there with the prius at an average of 47 mpgs. The TDI is a million times more fun to drive too.
For 2010, PSA (Peugeot-Citroen) says to sale a hybrid diesel car !
No diesel Mini Cooper in the USA?
BMW claims 60mpg for that.
But a diesel engine in a small car is still a stupid idea. They are loud and not fun to drive. Also the particle filter in a diesel doesn’t work properly till it’s hot and that can be a problem if you use it for short trips.
btw: Driving the Cooper to get 30mpg in the city is a waste of such a nice car.
I can’t get more than 25mpg out of mine.
(Though 38mpg on a highway are no problem at all – why did they only get 33?)
Prius more quiet?!?! damn!! i will fall sleep! Mini most fun to drive second Jetta! that is my 2 options
