How to increase fuel economy in my 05 Ford F250 6.0L diesel?

by admin on April 27, 2010

When I bought this truck new, diesel was a lot cheaper $1.60, now its topping $4.00. What upgrades would help fuel economy, new intake, new computer chip or tuner, exhaust etc? I use this truck everyday 50-60 miles normal driving and a couple times a month I do have to pull some equipment 8,500lbs. Right now I’m only seeing about 11-14 miles per gallon and any improvement would help.

The stock intake in the 6.0 is pretty decent though if you wanted you could upgrade it, the exhaust is a good upgrade and going with an SCT with a custom file on it for economy will help alot too. I am seeing an easy 17-18 with my 2006 6.0 HD Edition.

Drive by RPM’s and not speed, you keep that beast in the 1750-1850 RPM range on the highway and you’ll see a noticeable fuel mileage increase.

First thing: Put a KN air filter in. I don’t work for KN, but I put one in my Escape, and mileage went from 20mpg to 25mpg. Though, weather probably helped on that one.

A new computer chip might help, but the basics will help you even more. Make sure all of your fluids are changed regularly, your tires are up to the proper inflation pressure, don’t slam on the accelerator or the brake, don’t carry unnecessary weight.

I know what you mean with the price of fuel. I just paid $4.39/gal for diesel. It’s a good thing the tractor only gets filled monthly.

Go to the website below. If there is a way to give your Ford better mileage they have it.

A couple of things you can do.

1) Put in a high flow K N Filter
2) Change out your fuel filter and plugs
3) Accelerate slowly and don’t brake suddenly.
4) keep your tires inflated to proper pressure.
5) Kick off all excess weight in your car.

Hope this helps.

How many miles are on it? I have an 06 Amarillo and my mileage didn’t start getting better until I put about 60,000 on it. Did it recently start getting worse? If so there are there are some things the fuel companies did not tell the public about. The Ultra low Diesel does not mix with the low sulfur diesel. It for a ball of a powder substance in the tank and fuel system. Which causes restriction of fuel and through time will cause a great loss of power. Make sure you run a good conditioner. That may. I would not recommend a chip for fear of lifting the heads.
